We spent the day here recently with a group of good friends, climbing over fallen trees, hiking between elevations, and letting the sound of rushing water drown out everything else. Also known as Minas del Aguacate, Las Minas Waterfall is a series of cascading waterfalls, natural swimming pools, and even rock waterslides tucked into the rainforest between Atenas and San Mateo. The falls take their name from an old, abandoned gold mine that sits higher up along the Río La Unión — you’ll still spot remnants of old mining equipment scattered around as you explore.

The best part? It’s completely free. No entrance gate, no ticket booth, no crowds of tour buses. Just you, the river, and whoever you’re lucky enough to bring along. This is the kind of authentic, off-the-beaten-path Costa Rica we fell in love with — and one of the reasons we call Atenas home.

Where Is Las Minas Waterfall Located?

Las Minas Waterfall sits in the tiny village of Desmonte, in the Alajuela Province, roughly 20 minutes west of Atenas. It’s close enough for a spontaneous half-day trip, yet far enough off the main tourist trail that most visitors to Costa Rica never hear about it.

Its location also makes it an easy add-on to a bigger adventure day. Because it’s along the “old road to the beach” (Highway 3, sometimes called Aguacate), you can pair it with a trip toward the Pacific coast — Jacó, the crocodile bridge at Tárcoles, or the beaches near Orotina are all within reach.

How to Get to Las Minas Waterfall

Getting there is half the adventure — and honestly, one of our favorite parts.

From Atenas, take Highway 3 west. Watch for a flashing yellow light and the restaurant Chicharronera El Minero — that’s your turn. From there, follow the winding road for about 1.5 miles (2.4 km), staying left at the two forks. The road shifts between paved and dirt, so take your time and enjoy the scenery. When you reach a large bridge, you’ve arrived — there’s a parking area right there with room for several cars.

A few practical tips from experience:

• A 4×4 is strongly recommended. Parts of the road are unpaved, and they can get bumpy and steep. If you’re driving a low-clearance rental, go slow and stay cautious.
• Plug “Minas del Aguacate” into Google Maps or Waze. It’ll reliably guide you to the bridge. Don’t panic if it tells you to stop somewhere that looks like nowhere — that’s the parking area.
• Skip it on heavy rain days. The road can get slick, and — more importantly — mountain rivers carry a real risk of flash flooding.

Once you park, the first waterfall is just a short 10-minute walk from the road. From there, you can keep climbing up the mountainside, pool by pool, as far as your sense of adventure takes you.

What to Expect When You Arrive

The first fall greets you almost immediately, but the magic is in the exploration. Follow the trail up the right side of the river and you’ll discover pool after pool, each one a little more secluded than the last. Some spots have natural rock slides. Others are calm, deep pools perfect for a cold, refreshing dip.

And “cold” is the operative word — the water here is chilly. But after a hike through the humidity, that first plunge is exactly the reset you didn’t know you needed. We spent the day hopping between levels, scrambling over boulders, ducking under brush, and climbing over trees just to reach the next perfect view. It’s not a manicured resort experience, and that’s precisely the point.

If you’re the adventurous type, you can hike all the way to the top, where the old mine entrance sits. Explore carefully if you do — bring a flashlight and never wander too far in.

What to Bring to Las Minas Waterfall

Because there are no facilities here, come prepared. Here’s our go-to packing list:

• Water shoes or good hiking shoes — the rocks are slippery and the terrain is uneven
• Swimsuit and towel — you’ll want to get in the water
• Plenty of drinking water and snacks — plan to spend a few hours
• Bug spray — you’re in the rainforest, after all
• A waterproof phone pouch — protect your gear for those shots
• A trash bag — pack out everything you bring in

That last one matters. Las Minas stays beautiful because the people who love it take care of it. Leave it cleaner than you found it. Pura vida means respecting the land that gives us these moments.

When to Visit Las Minas Waterfall

The river is at its fullest during the green (rainy) season, roughly May through November, when the landscape turns impossibly lush. That said, the dry season offers safer, easier road conditions and calmer water. Either way, aim for a clear day, and avoid visiting during or right after heavy rain.

For solitude, go on a weekday. Weekends and holidays draw local families for picnics, music, and swimming — which is a joy in its own right, but if you’re after peace and quiet, a random Monday morning is unbeatable.

Las Minas Waterfall reminded us why we do what we do. It’s not the polished, filtered version of Costa Rica — it’s the real one. Cold water, tall trees, good friends, and the kind of green that makes you forget the outside world exists.
